Vittorio Grigolo war der Star in der Titelrolle von Offenbachs phantastischem Operndrama an der Spitze einer herausragenden Besetzung mit Sonya Yoncheva und Thomas Hampson, Kate Lindsey u. a. Die aufwändige Inszenierung von Offenbachs Meisterwerk " Les Contes d' Hoffmann" (" Hoffmanns Erzählungen") an der Royal Opera ist ein Publikumsliebling. Diese über 30 Jahre alte, vom Oscar-prämierten Filmregisseur John Schlesinger mit spektakulärem Glamour gestaltete Inszenierung lässt eine bildkräftige Welt im Stile des 19. Jahrhunderts lebendig werden und kam letztmalig in London zur Aufführung, so dass diese Veröffentlichung ein einzigartiges Dokument ist. Die jetzt erstmals als Video verfügbare Aufführung vom November 2016 wurde von Presse und Publikum gefeiert, denn sie war in allen Rollen perfekt besetzt: Vittorio Grigolo triumphierte in der Titelrolle des Hoffmann, die Kritik stellte ihn in eine Reihe mit Domingo und Alfredo Kraus und sprach von einer einzigartigen Kombination von großartiger Stimme und Starqualität ( The Guardian). Sonya Yoncheva gab eine hinreißende Antonia. Thomas Hampson sang die Rollen der Widersacher Hofmanns perfekt und Kate Lindsey die Rolle der Muse ebenso.

Orpheus in der Unterwelt, Offenbach s satirical answer to Gluck s Orfeo, was premiered in Paris 1858 and portrays society as amoral, the upper class as lax and indifferent to all and public opinion in charge of both. In the early 1980s legendary director Götz Friedrich created his own contemporary version of the operetta at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in German, filled with allusions to the contemporary cultural scene and society in general. Starring a large cast of renowned artists singers and actors Orpheus odyssey to the Olympic Gods and to the Underworld, in order to save his wife, receives a new face away from Paris in the 19th century and to bourgeois West-Berlin. The performance stars Julia Migenes Johnson, Donald Grobe, Astrid Varnay and George Shirley, to name but a few. Jesús López Cobos has the musical direction in this production. Seeking to exorcise the failure of his current love affair, the poet Hoffmann tells the tales of his three past loves - the doll-like Olympia, the high-class courtesan Giulietta, and the ambitious but delicate Antonia - and recalls how each was thwarted by the evil influence of his rival. In this production by the distinguished film director, John Schlesinger, with spectacular designs by Maria Björnson and William Dudley, Offenbach is nightmare world is brought to life. The all-star cast is headed by Placido Domingo as Hoffmann: his three loves are Ileana Cotrubas, Agnes Baltsa and Luciana Serra and the manifestations of his rival are rung by Geraint Evans, Robert Lloyd, Siegmund Nimsgern and Nicola Ghiuselev. The score, which includes such favourites as the " Barcarolle" and the " Dolls Song", is conducted by George Pretre. This finely-focused and witty production of Jacques Offenbach's Orphée aux Enfers with sets, costumes, lighting and effects by director Herbert Wernicke is a visual and musical delight. The burlesque conducted by Patrick Davin is situated at a famous fin de siècle café and in an stupendous coup de théâtre the ensemble makes their entry into Hell in a steam locomotive, which crashes through the ceiling. Elizabeth Vidal and Alexandru Badea in the main roles are supported energetically by the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of La Monnaie / De Munt and Offenbach's famous "can-can" is, as ever, an intoxicating high spot. In Offenbach's light and elegant comedy on the Greek legend of Orpheus a veiled satire on Napoleon I I I's régime a dissolute bunch of gods, bored with the cushioned confines of Mount Olympus, is in a rebellious mood. They are delighted to go slumming in Hell with the duplicitous Jupiter, who agrees personally to return Eurydice (now Pluto's lover) to her reluctant (and unfaithful) husband, hoping that, in the process, she will succumb to his charms.

Der Dichter Hoffmann erzählt von drei Frauen, die jeweils Facetten seiner ehemaligen Freundin darstellen sollen: Er berichtet von der seelenlosen Puppe Olympia, von der kränklichen Virtuosin Antonia und der grausamen Prostituierten Giulietta. In einer Kette von phantastischen Erzählungen erscheinen die bizarren Frauengestalten und andere gleichnishafte Wesen und Objekte. Jacques Offenbachs Parabel auf die Kunst, das Leben, die Liebe beruht auf mehreren Erzählungen des Autors E. T. A. Hoffmann, macht den Dichter aber selbst zur handelnden Figur in seinen eigenen Geschichten. Die Oper nimmt uns mit in paradoxe Strukturen, in denen Erzähler und Erzähltes miteinander verschmelzen.
