Über sein Leben geben die bisher erschlossenen Quellen wenig preis: Er soll in Nischapur im nordöstlichen Persien geboren und um 1221 ebendort gestorben sein. ' Attars Name zeigt an, dass er Drogist war. Man darf ihn sich vorstellen, wie er seinen Kunden nicht nur Heilkräuter, sondern auch Geschichten mitgab, die ihnen den Weg zum höchsten Ziel zeigen sollten, zu der im Meer ihrer Seele verborgenen Perle. Obwohl die überlieferte Anzahl von ' Attars Werken sicher übertrieben ist, war sein literarisches Schaffen äußerst fruchtbar: Mehrere umfangreiche Epen, eine Sammlung von Heiligenbiographien und zwei Lyriksammlungen legen davon Zeugnis ab. Von seinen Epen sind die " Vogelgespräche" das im Westen bekannteste Werk. Annemarie Schimmel hat eine repräsentative Auswahl aus den Epen und lyrischen Werken ' Attars getroffen und selbst übersetzt. In einer ausführlichen Einleitung führt sie in Leben und Werk dieses bedeutenden Mystikers ein. |
