Seine perspektivisch raffinierten Aufnahmen von Models, die sich zwischen Plüsch und Stofftieren drapieren oder hinter dicken Brillen tarnen, gehören gewiss zum Eigenwilligsten, was das Genre heute zu bieten hat. Am ehesten könnte man das Wirken Tellers wohl als "subjektive Dokumentarfotografie" beschreiben, eine Dokumentarfotografie zudem, die über ein nahezu endloses Spektrum an ästhetischen Möglichkeiten zu verfügen scheint: In den einstudiert-gleichförmig lächelnden Gesichtern von nationalen Schönheitsköniginnen etwa entlarvt sich die falsche Oberflächlichkeit der Schönheitsindustrie als deren Seele. Auf Tellers Kinderporträts oder den Bildern von Familienmitgliedern hingegen bringt der Fotograf eine melancholische Natürlichkeit zum Ausdruck, die das Wesen der abgebildeten Personen perfekt widerspiegelt. Nach Go-Sees, Tracht und More ist nun mit Märchenstüberl ein weiterer furioser Bildband dieses Genies des Profanen erschienen: Benannt nach jenem kitschigen Refugium im Keller von Tellers deutschem Elternhaus, in dem einige besonders ungewöhnliche, im besten Sinn des Wortes schamlose Selbstporträts entstanden. Neben einigen berühmten Modeaufnahmen enthält das Buch auch ungeschminkte, da sehr persönlich wirkende Fotos von Kate Moss, Isabelle Huppert oder Björk, nicht weniger enthüllende, aber eher skurrile Porträts von Barbara Cartland, O. J. Simpson, Arnold Schwarzenegger (mit dem Kopf im Maul eines Alligators unter einem Billardtisch liegend!) sowie fast schon zu Ikonen der neueren Fotogeschichte gewordene Ready-Mades wie das Bild eines gefrorenen Hundes in einer Mülltonne oder das eklige Stillleben eines Karpfens zwischen Kartoffelsalat und deutschem Pils.
