Nathan Hale: The Life and Legacy of the Revolutionary War's Most Famous Spy - Charles River Editors

Nathan Hale: The Life and Legacy of the Revolutionary War's Most Famous Spy

Charles River Editors

Audible Hörbuch

For over 230 years, American schoolchildren have been taught about the story of Nathan Hale, or at least a legend of it, and in the process the myth of Hale and his apocryphal final words have immortalized the young man as America's most famous spy, despite his failed mission. After the siege of Boston forced the British to evacuate that city in March 1776, Continental Army commander George Washington suspected that the British would move by sea to New York City, the next logical target in an attempt to end a colonial insurrection. He thus rushed his army south to defend the city. Washington guessed correctly, but it would ultimately be to no avail. Unlike Boston, New York City's terrain featured few defensible positions; the city lacked a high point from which to launch a siege, as the peninsula of Boston was fortunate to have. In the summer of 1776, the British conducted the largest amphibious expedition in North America's history at the time, landing over 20, 000 troops on Long Island. Washington's army attempted to fight, but Washington was badly outmaneuvered, and his army was nearly cut off from escape.

George Rogers Clark: "I Glory in War" - William R. Nester

George Rogers Clark: "I Glory in War"

William R. Nester

Audible Hörbuch

George Rogers Clark (1752-1818) led four victorious campaigns against the Indians and British in the Ohio Valley during the American Revolution, but his most astonishing coup was recapturing Fort Sackville in 1779 when he was only 26. For 18 days, in the dead of winter, Clark and his troops marched through bone-chilling nights to reach the fort. With a deft mix of guile and violence, Clark led his men to triumph without losing a single soldier. William R. Nester resurrects the story of Clark's triumphs and his downfall in this, the first full biography of the man in more than 50 years. Nester attributes Clark's successes to his drive and daring, good luck, charisma, and intellect. Born of a distinguished Virginia family, Clark wielded an acute understanding of human nature, both as a commander and as a diplomat. His interest in the natural world was an inspiration to lifelong friend Thomas Jefferson, who asked him in 1784 to lead a cross-country expedition to the Pacific and back. Clark turned Jefferson down. Two decades later, his youngest brother, William, would become the Clark celebrated as a member of the Corps of Discovery. After the revolution, he raged against the government and pledged fealty to other nations, leading to his arrest under the Sedition Act. He died at the age of 65, bitter, crippled, and alcoholic.

Washington's Revolution: The Making of America's First Leader - Robert Middlekauff

Washington's Revolution: The Making of America's First Leader

Robert Middlekauff

Audible Hörbuch

A vivid new portrait of the formative years that made George Washington a great leader, from a highly respected and accomplished historian who is a Bancroft Prize winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist.

George Washington was famously unknowable, but Robert Middlekauff penetrates the mystique to reveal the fears, values, and passions that drove him. Rich in psychological details regarding Washington's temperament, idiosyncrasies, and experiences, this audiobook shows us a self-conscious Washington who grew in confidence and experience as a young soldier, businessman, and Virginian gentleman; and was transformed into an American patriot by the revolutionary ferment of the 1760s and 70s. Taking command of an army constantly in dire need - without adequate food, weapons, and, at times, even clothing and shoes, right up until the end - Washington displayed incredible persistence and resourcefulness, and evolved into a leader who understood perhaps better than anyone the crucial role the army had to play in the formation of a new American society. Washington, Middlekauff leaves no doubt, was at the heart not just of the revolution's course and outcome, but also the success of the nation that it produced. This is an essential audiobook for understanding the character of one of America's great figures.

Ethan Allen: His Life and Times - Willard Sterne Randall

Ethan Allen: His Life and Times

Willard Sterne Randall

Audible Hörbuch

The long-awaited biography of the frontier Founding Father whose heroic actions and neglected writings inspired an entire generation, from Paine to Madison.

On May 10, 1775, in the storm-tossed hours after midnight, Ethan Allen, the Revolutionary firebrand, was poised for attack. With only two boatloads of his scraggly band of Vermont volunteers having made it across the wind-whipped waters of Lake Champlain, he was waiting for the rest of his Green Mountain boys to arrive. But with the protective darkness quickly fading, Allen determined that he could hold off no longer. While Ethan Allen, a canonical hero of the American Revolution, has always been defined by his daring, predawn attack on the British-controlled Fort Ticonderoga, Willard Sterne Randall, the author of Benedict Arnold, now challenges our conventional understanding of this largely unexamined Founding Father.

Widening the scope of his inquiry beyond the Revolutionary War, Randall traces Allen's beginning back to his modest origins in Connecticut, where he was born in 1738. Largely self-educated, emerging from a relatively impoverished background, Allen demonstrated his deeply rebellious nature early on through his attraction to Deism, his dramatic defense of smallpox vaccinations, and his early support of separation of church and state.

Nathan Hale: The Life and Death of America's First Spy - M. William Phelps

Nathan Hale: The Life and Death of America's First Spy

M. William Phelps

Audible Hörbuch

Few Americans know much more about Nathan Hale than his famous last words: " I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country. " But who was the real Nathan Hale?

M. William Phelps charts the life of this famed patriot and Connecticut's state hero, following Hale's rural childhood, his education at Yale, and his work as a schoolteacher. Even in his brief career, he distinguished himself by offering formal lessons to young women.

Like many young Americans, he soon became drawn into the colonies' war for independence, becoming a captain in Washington's army. When the general was in need of a spy, Hale willingly rose to the challenge, bravely sacrificing his life for the sake of American liberty.

Using Hale's own journals and letters as well as testimonies from his friends and contemporaries, Phelps depicts the Revolution as it was seen from the ground. From the confrontation in Boston to the battle for New York City, listeners experience what life was like for an ordinary soldier in the struggling Continental army.

In this impressive, well-researched biography, Phelps separates historical fact from long-standing myth to reveal the life of Nathan Hale, a young man who deserves to be remembered as an original American patriot.
