In the Footsteps of Columbus (Annotated): Introduction and Biography Included

Annie Cannon, Doug West

Audible Hörbuch

The book In the Footsteps of Columbus by Annie J. Cannon was originally published in 1893. The annotated version contains in addition to the original work:

An Introduction to the book with historical context to help the reader understand Miss Cannon's world in the 1890s. A detailed biography of Annie J. Cannon is included at the end of the book. The biography covers her life from the early years until she reaches the apex of her career at Harvard College.

This book is a story of Miss Cannon's trip to Spain and Italy in 1893 where she visits some of the major cathedrals, mosques, and palaces in Spain. Miss Cannon also journeys to Italy to visit the childhood home of Christopher Columbus. Her book was used at the massive 1893 World's Fair held in Chicago as a promotional booklet for the Blair Camera Company.

The biography covers her early life growing up in New England and her education at Wellesley College. Miss Cannon starts her career as a human "computer" working for Edward Pickering at the Harvard College Observatory. She advances in her career to become a Professor at Harvard. She was one of the key individuals that produced the massive Henry Draper Catalogue, which was the first authoritative catalogue of vital information about the stars. This work was an invaluable contribution to the science of astronomy. Generation of astronomers have used this work in their quest to understand the Universe. Annie Cannon was an exceptional woman who, in spite of her deafness, became one of the most well-known astronomers of her day.

Come and be a part of the life and times of this accomplished woman.

Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love - Dava Sobel

Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love

Dava Sobel

Audible Hörbuch

Galileo Galilei was the foremost scientist of his day. Though he never left Italy, his inventions and discoveries were heralded around the world. His telescopes allowed him to reveal the heavens and enforce the astounding argument that the Earth moves around the sun. For this belief, he was brought before the Holy Office of the Inquisition, accused of heresy, and forced to spend his last years under house arrest.

Galileo's oldest child was 13 when he placed her in a convent near him in Florence, where she took the most appropriate name of Suor Maria Celeste. Her support was her father's greatest source of strength. Her presence, through letters which Sobel has translated from Italian and masterfully woven into the narrative, graces her father's life now as it did then.

Galileo's Daughter dramatically recolors the personality and accomplishment of a mythic figure whose 17th-century clash with Catholic doctrine continues to define the schism between science and religion. Moving between Galileo's public life and Maria Celeste's sequestered world, Sobel illuminates the Florence of the Medicis and the papal court in Rome during an era when humanity's perception of its place in the cosmos was overturned. With all the human drama and scientific adventure that distinguished Latitude, Galileo's Daughter is an unforgettable story.

Schirra's Space - Wally Schirra, Richard N. Billings

Schirra's Space

Wally Schirra, Richard N. Billings

Audible Hörbuch

Irreverent, provocative, and filled with fascinating anecdotes, this autobiography by one of America's first astronauts offers a revealing inside look at the early days of space flight and the men who captured the heart of the nation. Wally Schirra was the only one of the original seven N A S A astronauts to command a spacecraft in all three pioneering space programs - Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. This chronicle of his experiences takes us into space on Schirra's 1962 Mercury flight that orbited Earth six times and aboard Gemini for the first rendezvous of two manned craft in space. Never reluctant to discuss the problems along with the stunning successes of those exciting, formative years, Schirra openly describes the pressures, tensions, and dangers associated with a launch. Nor does he confine himself to his days as an astronaut. He also speaks about his career as a navy pilot, which began in 1947 with biplanes, transitioned to jets for combat missions over Korea, and ended with rockets in space.
