Anne Frank: Eine Dokumentation ihres Lebens und ihrer Zeit

Aus einer ganz anderen Perspektive verfolgt die vorliegende Dokumentation Annes Leben. Bilder als Zeugnisse - ohne die Intimität des Tagebuchs - beschreiben Zeit und Orte, an denen sich die Familie Frank seit der Geburt des Vaters aufgehalten hat. Das Leben der Anne Frank tritt so zumeist in den Hintergrund. Wir lernen das Frankfurt der 20er-Jahre, Geburtsstadt Annes und die von politischen und wirtschaftlichen Krisen gebeutelte Weimarer Republik kennen, deren Instabilität nicht zuletzt auch zu Hitlers Machtübernahme und dem folgenden, unvorstellbaren Leid geführt hat. Die Abschaffung der Demokratie bis zum Boykott und schließlich die Verfolgung und brutale Vernichtung der Juden werden durch prägnante Texte und viel sagende Bilder dokumentiert. Annes Familie verlässt 1933 - wie sukzessive die Hälfte der Juden - das Land und flieht in die Niederlande, um sich dort ein vorerst friedliches Leben aufzubauen. Doch ab 1940 zieht der Faschismus auch in den Niederlanden ein: Nach der deutschen Besatzung folgen antijüdische Maßnahmen und Deportationen in Arbeits- und Konzentrationslager. < P> Viele wird gerade die zweite Hälfte dieses Buchs interessieren, da die Judenverfolgung in den Niederlanden in unserem Geschichtsunterricht eher stiefmütterlich behandelt wird. Als Erwachsener liest man das Buch in etwa zwei bis zweieinhalb Stunden - und zwar in einem Stück, da man es nicht aus der Hand legen möchte. Leider benutzt der Text immer wieder auch zeitspezifische Begriffe, die nur zum Teil in den hinten angehängten Worterklärungen erläutert werden. So verhaftet das Buch teilweise an der Oberfläche, wo tiefere Information gewünscht wird, regt andererseits aber auch zur weiteren Beschäftigung an. Diese bildreiche Dokumentation bestätigt, dass Bilder oftmals mehr sagen als 1. 000 Worte. Derart macht das Buch Jugendlichen ab etwa 13 Jahren wahrlich Lust auf Geschichte und sensibilisiert sie mit dem viel sagenden Schlusskapitel " Kampf den Vorurteilen" zugleich zu einem wachsamen und eigenverantwortlichen Umgang mit denselben. < I>-Simone Gefeller

Meet Barbara Reichmann, once known as Gucia Gomolinska: smart, determined, independent, and steadfast in the face of injustice. A Jew growing up in predominantly Catholic Poland during the 1920s and '30s, Gucia studies hard, makes friends, falls in love, and dreams of a bright future. Her world is turned upside down when Nazis invade Poland and establish the first Jewish ghetto of World War I I in her town of Piotrko'w Trybunalski.  

As the war escalates, Gucia and her family, friends, and neighbors suffer starvation, disease, and worse. She knows her blond hair and fair skin give her an advantage, and eventually she faces a harrowing choice: risk either the uncertain horrors of deportation to a concentration camp or certain death if she is caught resisting. She decides to hide her identity as a Jew and adopts the gentile name Danuta Barbara Tanska. Barbara, nicknamed Basia, leaves behind everything and everyone she has ever known in order to claim a new life for herself.  

Writing in the first person, author Planaria Price brings the immediacy of Barbara's voice to this true account of a young woman whose unlikely survival hinges upon the same determination and defiant spirit already evident in the six-year-old girl we meet as this story begins. The final portion of this narrative, written by Barbara's daughter, Helen Reichmann West, completes Barbara's journey from her immigration to America until her natural, timely death.

Janusz Korczak was more than a good doctor. He was a hero. The Dr. Spock of his day, he established orphanages run on his principle of honoring children and shared his ideas with the public in books and on the radio. He famously said that "children are not the people of tomorrow, but people today". Korczak was a man ahead of his time, whose work ultimately became the basis for the U N Declaration of the Rights of the Child.

Korczak was also a Polish Jew on the eve of World War I I. He turned down multiple opportunities for escape, standing by the children in his orphanage as they became confined to the Warsaw Ghetto. Dressing them in their Sabbath finest, he led their march to the trains and ultimately perished with his children in Treblinka.

But this book is much more than a biography. In it, renowned nonfiction master Albert Marrin examines not just Janusz Korczak's life but his ideology of children: that children are valuable in and of themselves, as individuals. He contrasts this with Adolf Hitler's life and his ideology of children: that children are nothing more than tools of the state.

And throughout, Marrin draws listeners into the Warsaw Ghetto. What it was like. How it was run. How Jews within and Poles without responded. Who worked to save lives and who tried to enrich themselves on other people's suffering. And how one man came to represent the conscience and the soul of humanity.

This is an unforgettable portrait of a man whose compassion in even the darkest hours reminds us what is possible.
