He first trod the boards at an early age and was soon spotted by Fred Karno, being taken to America for the first time in 1910. Within three years he had been spotted by Mack Sennett and made his first film in 1914, Making A Living. It was his second film, Kid Auto Races At Venice that first introduced the world to The Tramp - the character that was to make Chaplin's reputation. By all accounts Chaplin stumbled on the look by accident; he was unhappy at the outfit he had been allocated in his role of press reporter and wandered into the wardrobe and picked out a new one for himself, complete with baggy trousers, a tight jacket, large shoes, a Derby hat and walking cane. To make hiumself appear older on screen, he added a moustache and in an instant had created one of the most iconic characters in Hollywood history. This box set is positively packed with gems, films that showcase every talent Charlie Chaplin brought to the screen - acting, directing, writing and editing. Charlie Chaplin - The TrampDVDThe Tramp - 1915 Black & White. Classic Chaplin despite being a down and out, Charlie shows us that he can still be the perfect gentleman when it comes to looking after himself as well as the beautiful girl. Although tatty, his suit, bowler hat, tie and walking cane set him apart from the hoboes who try and steal his lunch and steal from the farmhouse where he has taken shelter. Even though he doesnt get the girl and his circumstances have changed little, we see Chaplin in the closing scenes ever hopeful walking off into the distance. Police - 1916 Black & White. Even when released from prison, Chaplin soon returns to his life of crime and attempts a robbery with an old prison acquaintance. Naturally, all does not go to plan, the robbery fails but Charlie manages to woo the lady of the house who eventually gives him a dollar and off he goes, happy as can be but the Police are not far behind! A Jitney Elopement - 1915 Black & White. Once again, Chaplin as the down and out comes across a girl, this one is to be wed, against her wishes, to a Count. Charlie manages to persuade her father that he is the Count and almost get away with it until the real Count turns up. Our hero escapes, with the girl, in a jitney (hire car) and a text book comedy car chase follows. In this charming film, Charlie does get the girl in the end hurray! |
