Simply Red - Greatest Video HitsDVD< I> Greatest Video Hits erzählt die weltweit erfolgreiche Laufbahn von Simply Red noch einmal im Zeitraffer. Dabei umspannt die prächtige Clip Compilation in chronologischer Abfolge sämtliche Stationen in der Karriere der englischen Gruppe. " Holding Back The Years" etwa stammt vom Debütalbum < I> Picture Book (1985). Dieser Song, dessen Video Kindheitserinnerungen im proletarischen England wiedergibt, brachte es in Amerika bis zur Spitze der Single-Charts. " It's Only Love", hier mit einem kleinen Film über eine Liebesbeziehung bebildert, war 1989 zuerst auf < I> A New Flame zu hören. Für " Stars" vom gleichnamigen Album-Millionseller (1991) hat sich " Rotkehlchen" Mick Hucknall eine stimmungsvolle Wüstenszenerie einfallen lassen; das Video zeigt ihn bei einer Wanderung auf einer Sanddüne. Das mit einem brasilianischen Samba-Groove unterlegte " Fairground" (von < I> Life aus dem Jahr 1995) wurde auf einer Kirmes gedreht, und zwar mit Achterbahn, Karussell, Riesenrad und allem, was sonst noch dazugehört. Und der Film zu " So Beautiful", musikalisch ein Paradebeispiel für den " Blue-Eyed Soul" der Briten, ist die Live-Aufnahme eines Konzertes. < P> Ganz nebenbei dokumentiert diese Zusammenstellung auch noch Mick Hucknalls besonderes Talent, Titel aus fremder Feder zu seinen eigenen zu machen. Die Mitte der 80er-Jahre erfolgreiche Ballade " If You Don't Know Me By Now" etwa basiert auf einem uralten Hit von Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. Und für " Money's Too Tight To Mention" griff der Sänger mit der geschmeidigen Soulstimme auf eine Vorlage der Valentine Brothers zurück; das Video dazu ist übrigens - dem Songthema entsprechend - in einem heruntergekommenen, schummrigen Billardsalon angesiedelt. < P> So folgt hier Klassiker auf Klassiker, ohne dass man sich auch nur einen Augenblick langweilen würde. Selbst aus der zeitlichen Distanz betrachtet haben die Videos von Simply Red und die dazugehörige Musik nichts von ihrer Unterhaltsamkeit verloren. < I>-Harald Kepler |
