Margaret Bourke White: Her Pictures Were Her Life (Histoire) - Susan Goldman Rubin

Margaret Bourke White: Her Pictures Were Her Life (Histoire)

Susan Goldman Rubin

Gebundene Ausgabe

An inspiring biography of one of the most successful photojournalists of the 20th century, this life of Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) is exactly the type of book teachers and parents of adolescent girls are looking for. It would be a mistake to treat this as a book for girls only, however, when so many great men-Bourke-White's father, her second husband, several darkroom technicians, and even General Jimmy Doolittle, commander of the 12th Air Force in World War I I-figure prominently in it as mentors, teachers, colleagues, and friends. Author Susan Goldman Rubin gracefully deals with sensitive material such as the photographer's shame at discovering that her father was Jewish. And she does a remarkable job of choosing appropriate pictures. As the chief photographer for < I> Life magazine, Bourke-White shot many hugely important but often harsh subjects. Rubin deftly edits these images so that famous photos like the haunting < I> Living Dead of Buchenwald, April, 1945 are here, but not such profoundly disturbing ones as Bourke-White's shot of bony corpses stacked for burning. The author underscores the photographer's extraordinary self-confidence as a young woman of huge ambitions and-beginning with Bourke-White's initial flirtation with the soft-focus style of Edward Steichen-delineates the growing power and clarity of her mature documentary style. Bourke-White's life-long interest in science-she kept jars of multilegged fauna on her office bookshelves at < I> Life-is fascinating, and the stories of her wartime adventures-in marooned life rafts, low-flying reconnaissance planes, and torpedoed ships-are frighteningly vivid.

The photographs themselves are ultimately given pride of place, in large duotone reproductions that do them ample justice. This book would be right for anyone over 10, and older readers might go on to Sean Callahan's < I> Margaret Bourke-White: Photographer, which is more of a traditional monograph and includes those images that tell truths so painful that Bourke-White herself had great difficulty sorting their negatives. < I>-Peggy Moorman

Claude Cahun: A Sensual Politics of Photography - Gen Doy

Claude Cahun: A Sensual Politics of Photography

Gen Doy

Taschenbuch

This is the first single-authored book in English on the photographer Claude Cahun, whose work was rediscovered in the 1980s. Doy moves beyond standard postmodern approaches, instead repositioning the artist, born Lucy Schwob, in the context of the turbulent times in which she lived and seeing the photographs as part of Cahun's wider life as an artist and writer, a woman and lesbian and as a political activist in the early twentieth century. Doy rethinks Cahun's approach to dress and masquerade, looking at the images in light of the situation of women at the time and within the prevailing 'beauty' culture. Addressing Cahun's ambivalent relationship with Symbolism and later relationship with Surrealism, this highly readable book also looks at Cahun's unusual approach to the domestic object.

With Robert Capa in the Spanish Civil War
Gebundenes Buch
Paris in the summer of 1937. A giant funeral procession wends its way from the city center eastward toward the Père-Lachaise Cemetery, accompanied by the sounds of Chopin's funeral march. The photojournalist Gerda Taro had been killed in the Spanish Civil War a few days earlier. Thousands come to pay their last respects to the émigrée from Hitler's Germany. The poet Louis Aragon speaks at the graveside, young girls hold up a large portrait of the deceased. Why did the French Communist Party honor a foreigner - one who was not even a member of the Party - with a "first-class" burial? Ernest Hemingway is said to have found Gerda Taro while searching for "better Germans", the term he used to describe Germans fighting on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. Taro is today considered one of the path-breaking pioneers of photography. She captured some of the most dramatic and widely published images of the Spanish Civil War and was the first female photographer to shoot images in the midst of battle. Her willingness to work close to the fighting set new standards for war photography and ultimately cost her her life. Taro stands alongside early twentieth century war photographers like Robert Capa and David " Chim" Seymour. Her death, the first fatality during war coverage, garnered worldwide attention. She had broken new ground, as a woman and as a photographer. Despite this, Gerda Taro has largely fallen into oblivion, especially in comparison to her colleague and partner Robert Capa. Whether gender and religion played a role in this would require a separate investigation. In any case, in her study of women resisting fascism, Ingrid Strobl reaches the conclusion that a combination such as woman-Communist-Jew represented a threefold stigma, and would almost guarantee Taro's exclusion from official history, both in the East and the West. It has been almost twenty years since the first biography. . .
