The AIDS Pandemic in Latin America - Shawn C. Smallman

The AIDS Pandemic in Latin America

Shawn C. Smallman

Taschenbuch

Of the more than 40 million people around the world currently living with H I V/ A I D S, two million live in Latin America and the Caribbean. In an engaging chronicle illuminated by his travels in the region, Shawn Smallman shows how the varying histories and cultures of the nations of Latin America have influenced the course of the pandemic. He demonstrates that a disease spread in an intimate manner is profoundly shaped by impersonal forces. In Latin America, Smallman explains, the A I D S pandemic has fractured into a series of subepidemics, driven by different factors in each country. Examining cultural issues and public policies at the country, regional, and global levels, he discusses why H I V has had such a heavy impact on Honduras, for instance, while leaving the neighboring state of Nicaragua relatively untouched, and why Latin America as a whole has kept infection rates lower than other global regions, such as Africa and Asia. Smallman draws on the most recent scientific research as well as his own interviews with A I D S educators, gay leaders, drug traffickers, crack addicts, transvestites, and doctors in Cuba, Brazil, and Mexico. Highlighting the realities of gender, race, sexuality, poverty, politics, and international relations throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, Smallman brings a fresh perspective to understanding the cultures of the region as well as the global A I D S crisis.

The Drag King Book - Judith Jack Halberstam

The Drag King Book

For a decade and more, the photographs of Del La Grace Volcano (previously Della Grace) have set the agenda for intense discussions about gender and identity within the queer world and beyond. Volcano's camera has most recently come to rest on the drag king phenomenon, primarily its incarnations in San Francisco, London, New York, Berlin and Paris. A drag king, according to Volcano, is "anyone (regardless of gender) who consciously makes a performance out of masculinity", and his kings-ranging from butch dykes to transsexuals-ooze the kind of camp masculinity usually reserved for pimps, Las Vegas balladeers, gay porn icons and the more sartorially sussed end of gangland.

Here Volcano teams up with academic Halberstam, interviewing drag kings and essaying some provocative observations. But while both authors and subjects insist on the fun, fun, fun of it all, there's often a seriousness in these incarnations that sits uncomfortably with Volcano's notion of "fag camp". The academic business of dissecting drag king and other trans-cultures has started with excellent work by Kate Bornstein, Halberstam and Jay Prosser, but here moves an important step further. While Halberstam's complex questions seem to perplex some of the king interviewees, < I> The Drag King Book stands as a shining example of what < I>can be achieved in the edgy confrontation between academy, activism and scene. But Volcano's photographs remain the < I>raison d'être of this book-always striking, witty and, whatever you think your sexuality might be this week, ridiculously horny. -< I> Alan Stewart

Miriam Margolyes, Alison Steadman and Nigel Planer star in Sue Limb's comedy parodying the arty and adulterous adventures of the Bloomsbury Group. A stellar cast, including Roger Lloyd-Pack, Morwenna Banks, Jonathan Coy and John Sessions, join in this affectionate send-up of the infamous Bloomsbury literary group, who dominated the English cultural scene in the early 20th Century. The series follows the fortunes of Vera Sackcloth-Vest - writer, gardener and transvestite - and her urge to escape from the tranquillity of the rather cramped little castle in Kent which she shares with her doting but ambiguous husband, who is 'something in the Foreign Office'. Vera's heart is forever surging with exotic passion, either for Ginny Fox, a highly-strung novelist who adores her, or the beautiful but shallow Venus Traduces. As the scene shifts from Kent to London, and Cornwall to Monaco, this close-knit coterie is divided by misunderstandings, jealousies and rows, whilst the colourfully chaotic characters are joined by such sort-of familiar figures as D H Lollipop, T S Jellitot and Sigmund Void.
