Händel, Georg Friedrich - Der Messias (bearbeitet von W. A. Händels " Messias" ist für viele unverzichtbarer Bestandteil des alljärlichen Weihnachtsrituals, kaum ein Werk ist im Advent und vor allem am Heiligen Abend häufiger zu hören. Jedoch stehen Erwartungen und Ankunft des Erlösers nur im Mittelpunkt des ersten Teils dieses sicher populärsten unter allen Oratorienwerken, während sich der zweite Teil mit Passion und Himmelfahrt beschäftigt und der dritte schließlich Jüngestes Gericht und Erlösung thematisiert. Anfang 1789 schuf Mozart als Autragswerk eine am Zeitgeschmack orientierte, fast klassische Neufassung des Händelschen " Messias", die mehr Blasinstrumente und weniger Streicher aufweist und unter K V 572 bekannt ist. Die vorliegende Aufführung dieser Fassung unter Helmuth Rillings Leitung in der Evangelischen Stadtkirche Ellwangen stammt aus dem Jahr 1991 und orientiert sich an einer eher klassischen Stilistik, wie sie Mozarts Auffassung nahelegt.
