Ein Ensemble mit Staraufgebot, ein Chor und ein Orchester von Weltrang unter der Leitung des renommierten Nikolaus Harnoncourt kamen im Mai 1997 zusammen, um den Geburtstag von Franz Schubert mit einer Neuproduktion zum Entstehungszeitpunkt von " Alfonso und Estrella" noch recht unerfahren war, liefert er ergreifend schöne Musik - sensibel orchestriert und mit starken Vokal-Linien versehen. Der mit zwei Emmys und vielen anderen Preisen ausgezeichnete Brian Large führt bei dieser historischen Produktion aus dem Theater an der Wien die Regie. Erst lange nach Schuberts Tod, im Jahre 1854, wurde das Werk in einer Bearbeitung von Franz Liszt auf die Bühne gebracht. Um die dramatische Struktur zu schaffen, hat Nikolaus Harnoncourt einige Nummern gekürzt.

Ein kleiner Trost für alle, die auch in diesem Jahr wieder keine Karte für Bayreuth ergattern konnten.
