Johannes Brahms: Academic Festival Overture; Violin Concerto; Symphony No. 4 [Julia Fischer; Cleveland Orchestra; Franz Welser-Möst] [Belvedere: BVE08010] [Blu-ray]

Blu-ray

The Cleveland Orchestra is the 'aristocrat among American orchestras' ( The Telegraph) and its sovereign, Franz Welser-Möst, rules his subjects with a velvet glove. Indeed, velvet and silk keep show ing up in descriptions of the Clevelanders sound under its principal conductor. It is Welser-Mö sts nimble alternation between smoothness and a sound thats as 'sharp-edged as a skyscraper' ( The Telegraph after the Brahms First at the orchestras London Proms concert). That keeps the ensemble and the audience figuratively on its toes. Brahms Fourth and last Symphony could be said to glow with autumnal colours. Endowed with a strong undercurrent of subdued melancholy, it seems to pine for an irretrievable past. Franz Welser-Möst offers a 'lean, propulsive performance' ( The Plain Dealer) of this work with his highly concentrated Cleveland Orchestra. The swift pace of the symphony in Welser-Mösts hands reflects the conductors quest for a distinctive, far-from-the-mainstream interpretation. Written nearly contemporaneously in the late 1870s, Johannes Brahms rousing Academic Festival Overture and Violin Concerto Op. 77 bear witness to a composer at the height of his abilities, a mature master of large-scale masterpieces. The Violin Concerto demands extreme technical proficiency. As if to exemplify this, violinist Julia Fischer gears herself from the very start of this emotionally searing work to maintaining a restrained yet passionate tone.

For his inaugural concert as the new Gewandhauskapellmeister, Andris Nelsons chose three pieces, each with symbolic power. At its centre is the ' Scottish' Symphony by Felix Mendelssohn, his most prominent predecessor, which was premiered by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under the baton of the composer himself in 1842. The symphony is framed by a commissioned work by the Leipzig composer Steffen Schleiermacher and Alban Bergs Violin Concerto, a key work of classical modernism. There is no question about it: this programme defines his agenda. It professes Leipzigs rich musical tradition, spanning the period from the 19th to the 20th century, and to the music of our time. Recorded at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, 22/23 February 2018.

Oistrakh: Violin Concertos

This programme introduces David Oistrakh not just as violinist, but also as father and friend in the performances of the Bach Double Concerto and Mozart Sinfonia concertante with his son, Igor. This pairing is said to have been David Oistrakhs favourite performance partnership. The performance of the Bach concerto is one of the Oistrakhs best readings of the work it formed their first foreign engagement as a duo, with the Festival Hall concert beginning the 1961 tour. The performance of the Mozart Sinfonia concertante at the Royal Albert Hall was sold out (this tour was said to be only the second occasion that David Oistrakh had played the viola in forty years). This performance is a wonderful combination with Menuhin conducting Oistrakh in a work that he himself had recently recorded with Rudolf Barshai (the second half of this concert saw Oistrakh conducting Menuhin in the Beethoven Concerto). Kondrashin was renowned as a concerto accompanist, and demonstrates his immense control and expressive technique in the Brahms performance. He was also one of David Oistrakhs favourite conductors.

In Shostakovichs Violin Concerto No. 1, the violin does not allow itself a break, continually tells its dark story, revolves around the same thoughts, jokes and mocks, stutters, gets into the vicious circle of ostinato Passa-caglia bass lines, loses itself in the loneliness of the extended cadenza and again and again falls into beguilingly beautiful singing. The Stalin regime would not have missed the fact that although a great many things run in small circles here, nothing runs smoothly, which is why the premiere did not take place until 1955, after Stalins death. Peter Tchaikovsky initially thought his Symphony of Fate was a failure and believed himself to be at the end of his creative powers. The audiences enthusiasm for the work grew with each performance. It was probably the composers nature, plagued by self-doubt, that made it almost impossible for him to develop a self-confident attitude to his own creative power. This recording of the 5th Symphony is another milestone in Andris Nelsons Tchaikovsky cycle with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.
