Gustav Mahler, Sinfonie Nr. 2 in c-Moll Anja Harteros - Soprano
Bernarda Fink - Alto

Gustav Mahler s gigantic Symphony No. 2in C minor usually fills out a concert on its own. But in this recording with the symphonieorchester des Bayerischen rundfunks( Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) under its principal conductor Mariss Jansons, the work is introduced by an exquisite and fitting choral work: A contemporary (1982) 16-voice arrangement of a song by Mahler, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, based on a poem by Friedrich Rückert and originally composed for voice and orchestra in 1901 performed here by the superb chor des Bayerischen rundfunks( Bavarian Radio Choir). The nickname Resurrection for Mahler s Second Symphonyis derived from the closing chorus of the last movement, in which Mahler set to music verses from Klopstock s Messias . Although the symphony is a challenge to perform, due to the length of the work as well as the exceptionally large musical scoring, it has become part of the standard repertoire. The Second Symphonyis a central work in Mahler s oeuvre, a work whose Munich performance of 1900 brought him the long hoped-for recognition as composer.

" Symphonies Nos. 1, 2 & 3"
Beginning with the First Symphony, Bernstein reveals Mahler's position at the hinge of modernism, while emphasizing his emotional extremism. The uplifting Second " Resurrection" Symphony, with which Bernstein had an especially long and close association, is recorded here in a historic performance from 1973, set in the Romanesque splendour of Ely Cathedral. In the Third, Bernstein encompasses the symphony's spiritual panorama like no other conductor - with the Vienna Philharmonic players alive to every nuance.

Richard is King. A monarch ordained by God to lead his people. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years. R S C Artistic Director Gregory Doran directs David Tennant in the title role of ? a definitive production of a great play'. ( Daily Mail)

Press Reviews

" David Tennant is mesmerising in the first show of Gregory Doran's six-year plan to present all of Shakespeare's works. A beautifully crafted, richly detailed production. " ( The Guardian ? ? ? ? )

" Gregory Doran's exceptional production is a rousing triumph. " ( The Observer ? ? ? ? ? )

" David Tennant gives a bravado performance of a multi-layered, complex and intelligent medieval king in Shakespeare's masterful history play. Gregory Doran's production is superbly orchestrated. This is a lucid, moving production packed with tremendous performances. From Michael Pennington's John of Gaunt, the last great Englishman, to Oliver Ford Davies's wonderfully bewildered Duke of York. " ( The Daily Express ? ? ? ? ? )

" One of the hottest tickets of the year. " ( The Times)

" A lucid and gripping account of Richard I I. David Tennant is in splendid form here. In his gorgeous, gold-embroidered robes, this Richard is wrapped in the mystique of medieval majesty. There isn't a weak link in the cast. Ferocious eloquence overcomes deathbed infirmity in Michael Pennington's superb portrayal of John of Gaunt, and Oliver Ford Davies gives a fine edge of grumpy comedy to the Duke of York's conscience-stricken dithering. " ( The Independent)

" David Tennant delivers a vivid, intelligent performance in Gregory Doran's clear, detailed and dynamic production. One of the year's hottest tickets. Oliver Ford Davies's Duke of York is an unalloyed delight. " ( The Evening Standard)

" Michael Pennington is little short of magnificent as John of Gaunt. " ( The Daily Telegraph)

" Nigel Lindsay's Bolingbroke is a palpably dangerous figure? Jane Lapotaire turns the Duchess of Gloucester into a silver-haired figure whose widowed grief manifests itself in a burning appetite for revenge. " ( The Guardian)

" A fine, restrained Michael Pennington gives desperate dignity to John of Gaunt's lush - sceptred isle and silver sea - lament for England. Emma Hamilton brings a lovely grace to the small, beguiling part of Richard's wife. As the Duke of York, Oliver Ford Davies is radiantly authentic. He delivers many speeches as if he were quietly arguing with himself and the audience were eavesdropping. When he erupts into violent confrontation he is shattering. " ( The Observer)

A masterpiece of classical dance, and a Christmas favourite with audiences everywhere, this Nutcracker is a magical version of the score by Tchaikovsky filmed at the Bolshoi Theatre. Since its première in Saint-Petersburg in 1892, The Nutcracker has been one of the most successful classical ballets and Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Yuri Grigorovich deals with Hoffmann s fantastic imagery and takes ideas from Marius Petipa s scenario: battle of the mice, snowflakes flurry, character dances executed by the dolls that came to life. . . The most talented soloists of the Bolshoi Ballet appear in this production including Nina Kaptsova ( Marie) and Artem Ovcharenko (the Nutcracker Prince) and Denis Savin ( Drosselmeyer).
